Intern-al Affairs 4: Ashleigh

Time to say good-bye to our latest intern Ashleigh Altham. Coming directly from Australia, Ashleigh completed a 3-month placement with us. From photoshoots to garment production, social media updates to press releases, she gave us a precious helping hand in the last months leading up to our second collection launch. Starting her studies in Criminology and Criminal Justice, she changed field and graduated with a degree in Fashion Marketing and Merchandising from the Australian Institute of Creative Design in Brisbane. She then gained styling experience in retail for an Australian designer as well as for fashion shows and shoots before coming over to London.

Why did you want to work for Antithesis?

Antithesis was first introduced to me through an internship company that was helping me find an internship that was suited to my career wants and needs. After years of experience working in the retail industry back home, I was really inspired by the work that Antithesis do and what they stand for. It was really refreshing to work with a label that wants to connect with their customers and not only focus on what’s trending that season but how their clothes can be multi-functional but stylish at the same time. I also love that it is really important that everything is manufactured in the UK.

What have you learned during your internship?

I’ve learnt a lot throughout my internship, it’s been a really well rounded experience for me. I always had a range of tasks so it was never boring. There’s nothing worse than doing the same thing day and in and day out. It was also really great to learn more about sustainable fashion as it was never something I had a lot of knowledge about.

What have you most enjoyed doing in your time at Antithesis?

I really enjoyed working with both Renée and Zahra; it meant I always had something new and exciting to do. It could range anywhere from working in production and meeting with manufacturers and pattern cutters, to social media management and blogging.

What do you think this internship has brought you?

Above all else my internship has taught me a lot of myself and life and given me more knowledge and confidence to building a successful career.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I’m still trying to find an answer to that question myself but I’m really excited to get back home and find out!

Intern-al Affairs 1: Leu

Today let us introduce you to the Antithesis team’s latest member: Leu Solomon. Leu has been assisting us in the studio since the beginning of June. She has been doing such a great job that we decided to share it with you! Originally from Minneapolis, she’s the oldest of five kids. She first got a degree in Journalism and Public Relations and worked in buying and marketing before changing fields to design. She’s now living in East London and just about to start a BA in Womenswear at the London College of Fashion.

What are your objectives/ambitions for the future?

To have my own fashion label. I want to be an influential designer. My biggest fear coming to London was that my creations and designs wouldn’t be able to compete with the talent here. Students who attend LCF come from all corners of the world with the same dream I have. It’s competitive. Completing a foundation degree and obtaining this internship has validated the work I’ve done so far and what I aspire to be.

Why did you want to work for Antithesis?

I knew I wanted to work for a womenswear company and I loved the fact that Antithesis was a company on the cusp of launching their brand. I really wanted to be a part of the process rather than an intern who gets coffee and does the filing.

What have you learnt so far during this internship?

You name it and I’ve done it. Pattern cutting, sourcing, product design & development, creating spec sheets, blog writing, research and attending fashion events. Actually, my favorite part so far has been applying the theoretical skills about design that I learned in school and seeing how it really works when producing a garment. In my first week, Renée had me sketch possible attachment ideas, source materials for it and then produce a toile of the sketch. It was conception to completion and I loved it!

What do you think this internship will bring you?

Just being chosen for this internship was a confidence booster, it was the first time I had shown my design work to anyone professionally. So confidence definitely but also gaining experience working in a studio atmosphere has been beneficial. There are so many parts to owning and running a clothing company that I didn’t know. This internship also gives me a reference point for what to expect for the future and more importantly, it’s been really fun.

Ethical Fashion Fellowship 500

We are very proud to announce that we have just been selected to be a member of the Ethical Fashion Forum’s ‘Fellowship 500′! The fellowship is a new initiative which will unite 500 of the world’s foremost innovators and leaders in the fashion sector every year. It combines individuals and businesses across all sectors: design, manufacturing, retailing, media, consultancy, education, textile recycling and even cotton cultivation! It aims at ‘taking the fashion industry to tipping point- the point at which sustainable practices by fashion businesses become the rule rather than the exception to it- from field to final product’. We are thrilled to be part of this exciting venture and are looking forward to play a supporting role in improving the industry.

Fashioning the Future Awards

Last week, we attended the third edition of Fashioning the Future award ceremony, an annual student competition organised by the Centre for Sustainable Fashion. This year, the event was hosted in Canary Wharf’s East Wintergarden, a stunning horseshoe-shaped glass arch nested between skyscrapers. Guests were welcomed with (refillable) glasses of champagne and were served exquisite canapés through the evening. Sponsored by the UN and The Body Shop, the competition is growing every year, becoming a reference in finding the next leaders in sustainable fashion design. Surprisingly, none of the six winners were from the UK, rather they came from all over the world: United States, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Australia and Portugal. Winning entries were very diverse, ranging from outerwear pieces made out of cork from a management system developed around the concept of life-cycles. Outfits from winners and runner-ups were showcased on live models sitting on wooden stools amongst the crowd, only recognisable by their matching headpieces. Congratulations to the organisers, who proved once again that responsible fashion can be synonymous with glamour, innovation and, more importantly, talent. Will Antithesis be part of the finalists of Fashioning the Future 2012?
