Intern-al Affairs 2: Ellis O’Gorman

We’d like to introduce you guys to our latest superstar intern: Ellis O’Gorman. Ellis has been helping us out in the studio since the beginning of August, she’s an amazing copy writer and works hard to make sure we are visible to  our online social media network. One of her first missions was helping out at our Launch night back in September, making sure that all our guests we warmly welcomed and could walk away with a lovely Antithesis garment in hand! Ellis has previously been studying an online Foundation Retail Marketing and Management degree whilst training as a creative events planning & promotions assistant at a samples sales company based in Sussex. Ellis is originally from Brighton and has recently been living in Central London, but will be returning home to the seaside this December. We’ll miss her terribly, but our loss is Brighton’s gain! Before we let her go off to her bright future we wanted to share her lovely smile and experiences with you!

Our lovely Intern Ellis

Why did you choose to work with Antithesis?

I was first introduced to Antithesis by an internship company who had been helping me to find the right kind of internship for me. I looked them up online and the minute I watched their first video and saw how clever the designs were I really wanted to go and interview for the opportunity to work with Antithesis. Not only did I love the designs, but the whole concept behind Antithesis intrigued me and I’m particularly interested in womenswear. So I was really excited for the chance to work for a label that I found both interesting and exciting.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I would like to go on and study a Fashion Marketing & Promotion course either at University or through an online course. I would also like to spend some more time getting experience within a marketing role at larger fashion companies and carry on learning more about this career path to (fingers crossed) work within a role in this field later on.

Hard at work!

Have these ambitions changed since working with Antithesis?

Not at all, if anything I feel like it’s helped me to be more certain about the career path I hope to take. I feel less indecisive about where I want to go in the Fashion industry.

What have you most enjoyed doing in your time at Antithesis?

I’ve really enjoyed contributing towards the blog posts, I enjoy creative writing so it’s been fun to get the chance to do quite a bit of it. I’ve also loved learning more about sustainable fashion as it wasn’t something I had always paid attention to before. Its been great to learn more about it, and I’ve even found myself thinking a bit more about my purchases and what I’m wearing these days.

What will you remember most about your time at Antithesis?

There’s quite a few things I’ll remember about my time at Antithesis. I think I’ll remember the experience as a whole and the great time I’ve had working for Antithesis. I’ll remember the Launch Night at the Park Plaza which was an amazing evening as well as spending some time getting to see first hand the processes that go into designing a collection. I’m also going to remember some of the good tips on how to be an effective marketeer that I’ve picked up whilst working for Antithesis.

Commute Smart Week: Retrospective

It is a well known fact that the daily commute is often a daily drag and it can be all too easy to sometimes get lost in the routine monotony of it all that we forget to try and find both new ways of working & commuting! Looking back on our collaborations during Commute Smart Week it seems we learnt quite a few things on what commuting means and what it is like for different people. During our time spent working with the delightful Ceri Heathcote behind Style Eyes Ethical Fashion Blog and the lovely Susie Cole from Magnifeco we learnt that everybody’s travelling needs are different.

Susie looking great in the Rectangular coat!

Copy Producer Susie Cole spent her time throughout the week cycling into work wearing Antithesis clothing and it was great to hear that Susie thought  ”the clothes were beautifully cut, they were tailored but not tight which meant they were easy to move in – a must if you’re cycling!”

The great thing about cycling is it has its health & wealth benefits, not only do you get fit but there’ll be no need to fork out a fortune for a gym membership. We lent Susie the Rectangular coat, Two piece blouse, Anti-blazer and The High waisted trouser which were all the perfect fit for office style!

Susie looked great in the pieces and we were more than happy to hear she was comfortable too! Susie also mentioned ” I find cycling helps to clear my mind” so if that isn’t enough reasons to give cycling a try for a week then I don’t know what is! Not only can you try something new for the week, but you can be sure to do it in style and comfort wearing Antithesis clothing!

Wearing the Anti-Blazer & Two-piece Blouse

Another lifestyle change Antithesis learnt to consider when thinking of ways to alter your commute is “Remote & Agile Working”. The Work Wise website largely promotes this kind of working during the Winter months as it can help reduce the stress that commuting to and from work can bring. Ceri Heathcote told us all about her week working from home in Antithesis clothing and told us all about how she juggles working from home.

Ceri working the Circular Parka

After being inspired to start her blog when on maternity leave Ceri mentioned that she “always loved fashion and it made sense to write about something that I was passionate about” and her blog has continued to be a success since. One of the positives of working from home that Ceri mentioned is “It saves lots of money as I don’t have to pay for the petrol and it fits well with my aim to live as sustainably as possible”.  Although Ceri did tell us that she misses the feeling of “being out and about and having a reason to get a bit dressed up” that commuting brings, it seems that overall Ceri enjoys working from home. We lent Ceri our more casual pieces such as the Circular Parka, Reversible knit and Knit piece for the week and from the pictures Ceri sent over it looks like she looked great whilst working from home!

The Reversible Overpiece

Whether or not you commute to/from work and whether or not you cycle in, use the car or the train, Antithesis clothing works for everyone despite your lifestyle needs. We hope that we’ve given you a few ideas on changing up your Commute and looking stylish as you do it!

Getting to know you: Magnifeco’s Kate Black

It’s probably becoming clear that here at ANTITHESIS we love bringing you new ways to make your commuting life better. With it currently being Commute smart week we wanted to share what makes our dark and frosty morning commute a little brighter this winter!

Commuting to and from work is can be a bit of a chore regardless of how much you love your job. With the dark, wet and windy season upon us as well  our commutes are getting just that little bit more miserable. However, the 11th of November saw the start of Commute Smart Week where their annual campaign was launched to help raise awareness of the better ways in which we can make those dreary Autumnal commutes both a bit easier and more enjoyable.

Many of you out there will probably be nodding your heads in agreement with us that it can often be pretty dull sitting on a train, tube or bus in the early hours of the morning with very little to do except turn to your smartphones, free paper or other magical means of maintaining consciousness at the crack of dawn. With your morning sanity in mind ANTITHESIS is here to share a little gem of an ethical fashion blog Magnifeco, which has helped keep us entertained everyday this week on our way to work.

Magnifeco is filled with wonderful daily ethical & sustainable fashion advice as well as other great tips on life and style. Its thoughtful, honest and fashion forward content has made Magnifeco a topnotch bookmark on our morning trail. It’s a delightful blog with charmingly written posts to make catching up on ethical style news both entertaining as well as insightful. Deep in a fever of admiration and wanting to know more about the people behind this great ethical site, ANTITHESIS recently contacted the creator behind Magnifeco, Kate Black.

When we told her about our quasi-commuting-obsession and the fact that Commute Smart week happened to be on the horizon we decided it might be an idea to have a clash of cultures and see how our ANTITHESIS offering fairs over the week with one of her busy London contributors. Magnifeco’s commute smart review of the ANTITHESIS collection can be found here.

In the meantime we’ve caught up with Kate for your reading pleasure, because she’s responsible for a great start to our day; she’s exactly the kind of forward thinking, straight talking, driven modern woman that inspires us at ANTITHESIS; and because we love celebrating people making a positive difference in the fashion industry! Here she is in all her glory.

Magnifeco’s Kate Black

Tell ANTITHESIS a little bit about you, where are you from? What are your passions?!

My name is Kate Black, I’m a Canadian living in Boston. I’m passionate about ethics and aesthetics…the two ideas that drive Magnifeco-  the digital source for eco-fashion and sustainable living.

What motivated you to start Magnifeco and what inspires you to write?

As a vegetarian, I was always conscious about what I put in my body, but not about what I put on my body. Eco-fashion entered my consciousness around 2007-2008 when mainstream magazines (like Marie Clarie and Vanity Fair) were publishing their green issues. Ethical fashion really resonated with me, but it was hard to find. I was living in Tokyo at the time and just started trend-hunting and writing about great eco and sustainable designers from around the world that were available online. People liked and the site started to grow – we are now read in 140 countries!

If you had to choose 3 of your favourite ethical fashion brands, which would they be and why?

There are so many great British ethical brands. Because of the support of Estethica, Eco-Luxe and Pure, ethical fashion is thriving in the UK. One of my favourite brands is People Tree and the vision and drive Safia Minney has; pairing contemporary designers with her fairtrade co-operatives. People Tree’s clothing is stylish and affordable. Izzy Lane and her sheep sanctuary are inspiring; creating great knits and wovens all form her own flock. Also love Beyond Skin and their gorgeous, vegan shoes.

How do you think sustainable fashion brands are faring in a world full of fast fashion?

I think it’s difficult. Everyone agrees the fashion industry needs to change; it’s toxic and harmful as it is. But I think consumers have been too focused on ‘value’ in the form of dollars and cents and changing that perspective to place value on environment, people (who make the items) and longevity. You’ve made some great strides in the UK with brands like GoodOne and Reclaim To Wear collaborating with TopShop. It’s great to see the integration of ethical fashion in with fast fashion; makes it easier for consumers to compare price/style and ethics in one place

You already contribute to sustaining our environment by advising your readers on ethical clothing brands, but are there other pieces of advice you like to give your readers?

I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe. The idea of pairing down the number of pieces it takes to be and feel stylish is great for the pocketbook and the environment. When your wardrobe is made up of 10-12 pieces it forces you to really look at the quality of the items, to look at accessories and to explore swapping and sharing. Buying less is a great start to having a more sustainable wardrobe.

Well, we hope dear reader, this might be the beginnings of a beautiful relationship! If you haven’t been to the Magnifeco blog as yet – as we’ve become used to saying this Commute Smart week – “get on your bike, you never know what your missing out on!”

ANTITHESIS & The Return Of The College Shop

One of our favourite pastimes  here at ANTITHESIS is discovering pieces by fresh young designers. In this respect, LCF’S College Shop in Kingly Court, where our own garments have been featured this year, has not only been a professional opportunity but also a chance to indulge one of our greatest pleasures. In fact we’d go as far as to suggest the 2012 LCF College Shop offers some much needed winter retail therapy for London’s fashion sect!

We are so excited to be a part of this brilliant two-week pop up shop this year. Last Thursday’s launch event allowed us to catch up with the lovely people behind “The Very Simon G” blog, as well as the makers of Designer Look Book to discuss our College Shop offerings and inspirations behind the collection.

But we wanted to spotlight some of the extraordinary talent which comes out of LCF, so if you’re looking for some fabulous additions from fresh young talent to add to your wardrobe this autumn, or in fact for that special someone in time for Christmas! ANTITHESIS are here to bring you our Top 6 picks from College Shop 2012.

(1) For a gorgeous new dress take a look at what the brilliant Ada Zanditon has been up to. This simple piece can be dressed down for the daytime with some chunky boots and colourful tights to brighten the outfit up or add a nice leather jacket and killer heels for that dinner date outfit.

(2) If you’re in need of something stylishly waterproof, then you should to get your hands on our Circular Parka with drawstring details that allow you to change the way you wear it depending on your outfit and mood!

(3) For the perfect bag to wear with the dress or the parka so that you can carry around your matching lipsticks, we recommend this vegetarian leather handbag from the talented Danielle Foster – we became very familiar with her work and invited her to present her collection at our at out launch event in September, we are so pleased to see her star rising in the fashion accessories world.

(4) The prize for coolest addition to your winter wardrobes would have to go to the brilliant Laura Aspit Livens whose interesting hats will make your heads the talk of the high fashion street – which we heard was most recently located somewhere in Dalston, but it’s always on the move!

(5) If your boyfriend, husband or brother are all looking for a super cool jumper this Autumn/Winter then they should look no further than the fab Joe Turvey whose uncompromising print need to be seen on our pavements this season!

(6) Another great item, which we recommend you perhaps encourage your man to invest in for himself! Is this awesome Biker Jacket from the brilliant Domingo Rodriguez, it’s perfect for adding a health does of bad boy edge to any wardrobe.

Those are just a few of the great designers and pieces that we have seen over the past couple of days at College Shop. However there is so much more for you guys to have a look at, so if merely browsing from your computer desks at home isn’t enough, make sure you get down to The College Shop before the 1st November to take a look around, the gems you’ll find and loves you’ll harbour are not to be missed. Happy shopping!

Here at ANTITHESIS one of our favourite past times is following the posts and progress of our fellow bloggers. We’re sure many of you will agree, the blog-o-sphere is a wild and wonderful land of discovery!  However the sheer scale of the internet means inquisitive minds can get lost out there.

Some days that’s the pleasure of it all when you fire up Stumbleupon and throw yourself into the void, other times you yearn for the consistancy of a good blog with fresh content – you know, that blog ‘where  everybody knows your name’!

Well, for ANTITHESIS one such blog is “Hana and George” the carefully crafted blog by the lovely Miss Hana Reynolds.

ANTITHESIS and The College Shop!

As some of you may or may not already know, our ANTITHESIS journey was born when Renée and I met whilst studying at LCF. I was at LCF studying an MA in Fashion Entrepreneurship whilst Renée was learning all about Fashion and the environment. As alumni of the London College of Fashion our paths crossed when we were both attending a SEE event on how to set up your own fashion business. It’s thanks to our time spent at LCF that Renée and me learnt some amazing things on how to set up your own label as well as how to maintain a sustainable business!

The support that we have been so fortunate to have received from LCF has been truly brilliant! Even upon graduating, LCF have continued their support, when they sponsored the Goody bags for our Park Plaza launch night.

At ANTITHESIS we’re now excited to let you guys know that ANTITHESIS will be taking part in LCF’s 2012 College Shop! After last year’s success, the ANTITHESIS team are more than pleased to be involved in such a great project and give you fans of our collection the chance to come down and try on the clothing yourselves! We will be retailing throughout the 3 week opening period, so if there is anything that takes your fancy from our web store, then please come down and have a look around!

The Autumn College Shop will be launched on Thursday 18th October and will carry on through until Thursday 1st November. The store will be located on the ground floor of Kingly Court, please see the link below for further details!  I look forward to seeing you guys there!

ANTITHESIS & Friends!

Even though our launch at the Park Plaza was a couple of weeks ago now, at ANTITHESIS we are still full of excitement from what was such a wonderful evening. Thanks to the brilliant Ecoluxe we were aided in finding some great names to join us for the evening who we believe didn’t get as much spotlight as they deserved. So for that reason, we’re going to take this chance to tell you guys a little bit about the lovely brands, Danielle Foster, Panchachuli and Caipora who joined us for the night.

Accessories Designer Danielle Foster gained much interest throughout the evening for her truly fabulous handbag designs. What we really loved about much of Danielle’s fabulous work was that it carried a strong 1940s influence, which made her accessories really stand out. Danielle’s accessories get a big thumbs up from us at ANTITHESIS, so please take a look at her website to see what she gets up to!

Another charming accessories company who joined us at our Park Plaza launch was the brilliant Caipora. Their unusual and ethically designed products also gained a lot of interest from our guests for the evening. Priding themselves on their ethical use of products, Caipora uses strong natural influences to create their vibrant and gorgeous pieces.  So if you missed out on the chance to see Caipora at our Park Plaza event, or saw something there that you now wish you had bought, take a look at their website for even more creations!

The final accessories company who came to join us for an evening full of fashion and excitement was Panchachuli who brought with them some gorgeous woven scarves, stoles, shawls and throws all made from pure fabrics and materials. Their carefully made items were gorgeous and soft, and with the winter drawing in one of their 100% pure pashmina scarves would be great for keeping you cosy in the wind. So please have a look at them online!

The Ultimate Travel Bag Goes to Paris

Last week, we took advantage of our bi-annual trip to the world-renowned textile tradeshow Première Vision in Paris to test one of our favourite products: the Ultimate Travel Bag! Designed by Charlie Goldthorpe for our first edition of the Antithesis Collective, it transforms from a carry-on suitcase into a shoulder bag or rucksack and comes with a detachable pouch. Here is Renée’s experience:

“The suitcase is the perfect size for a trip of less than a week: I managed to fit in six days-worth of clothes, 2 pairs of shoes, my huge beauty case, a few notebooks and a handful of snacks. I normally travel with a backpack so it was a relief not to have all the weight on my shoulders, plus it looks much more stylish! The detachable pouch and strap came in very handy to carry valuables such as my travel tickets, passport, wallet, phone and keys.

Once in Paris, I removed the Design Go trolley and folded the bag into an oversized tote in which I put my work files, business cards, lunch and the pouch containing my personal items. A women’s day bag can never be too big! Before going out at night, I simply dropped the bag into my room and wore the pouch as a chic evening clutch.

Overall I am very pleased by the versatility of the bag. Day or night, work or leisure, city or countryside: whatever your look or activity, the bag adapts to you. I definitely recommend it to all of you nomadic cosmopolitan females out there!”

Available now at our online store.

Excited to be in Paris! Travelling with the bag as a suitcase and wearing the Anti-Blazer

Ready for PV wearing the bag as tote, our Two-Piece Blouse and High-Waisted Trouser

Going out with the pouch, our Little Navy Dress, Fringe Attachment and Reversible Overpiece

Saturday Market shopping with the pouch & strap wearing our Reversible Overpiece
